Teatro Aldrovandi Mazzacorati is a charming little theatre hidden in a magnificent villa at the foot of the hills right outside the city centre.
This intimate, originally preserved gem of a theatre in the left wing of villa Aldrovandi Mazzacorati is the only example of a suburban private theatre found in the area of Bologna. The theatre was built for Giovan Francesco Aldrovandi, an amateur actor, playwright and theatre lover and was inaugurated in 1763. The refined decoration of the auditorium features delicious pastel frescoes on the walls and twenty tritons and caryatides who seem to carry the two balconies with their spiralling bodies. With a capacity of 80 spectators, the theatre is famous for its acoustics and offers a rich season with drama and opera performances, concerts and lectures.
Guarded and run by very few volunteers of the “Associazione Cultura e Arte del ‘700”, the theatre only rarely opens its doors to groups. Our guide will be nothing less than Marilena Frati, the head curator of the theatre and President of the association.
