This group meets regularly to watch a film together and, whenever possible, discuss it afterwards. The films will be in the original language (more often than not in English, but not exclusively), and may include both new releases and classic movies.

Film Fans: I’m Still Here
This award-winning Brazilian film (Best Screenplay at the 2024 Venice Film Festival) has been a huge hit in its home country and has also garnered critical acclaim and been nominated for three Oscars (Best International Feature Film, Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Fernanda Torres). I’m still Here is a political and historical drama spanning decades which is based on a memoir by Marcello Rubens Paiva whose father was one of the approximately 20,000 people who were tortured and ‘disappeared’ during the military dictatorship in Brazil.

Film Fans: The Brutalist
The Brutalist is an epic postwar drama about a Hungarian architect coming to America (Adrien Brody) which the Hollywood Reporter called: “A monumental symphony of immigrant experience”. Critical acclaim has been followed by awards (Golden Globe for acting, best drama, best director, American Film Institute’s Film of the Year, etc.). It is, however, epic in duration too – 215’/3.5 hours.

Film Fans: Emilia Pérez
Our next trip to the cinema (Sunday matinée at the Lumière) is to see Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, which The Guardian called ‘a riotously entertaining trans Mexican cartel musical’. It has just won the Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Supporting Actor – Zoe Saldana.
Please note that the film is in English, Spanish and French, with Italian subtitles.
