This group meets regularly to watch a film together and, whenever possible, discuss it afterwards. The films will be in the original language (more often than not in English, but not exclusively), and may include both new releases and classic movies.

Film Fans: Marty Supreme
Our next film is Marty Supreme by Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems, Good Time) starring Timothee Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, which has been nominated for nine Oscars.

Film Fans: Sentimental Value
I’m incredibly excited about our next film – Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier, starring a phenomenal cast which includes Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgard, Inga Ibsdotter Illeaas and Elle Fanning. I have already seen the film and have absolutely loved it. It’s a family drama (but not without comedic elements) centering around the relationship between a father and his two daughters.
This is a Sunday 25th January matinee showing at cinema Odeon, and there will be a discussion afterwards with Roy Menarini (part of the Restate dopo i titoli di coda series). Let’s meet at the Odeon between 9.15 and 9.30 on Sunday, 25th January for breakfast and, if anyone’s interested, we may even go out for lunch afterwards.

Film Fans: The Man Who Fell To Earth
As we wait for the latest awards contenders to open in our cinemas, let’s usher in a New Year with a classic, The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976). On the tenth anniversary of his death (hard to believe that it’s been that long!), Cinema Modernissimo has organised the David Bowie Day in honour of this most unique and talented artist. This gem from the acclaimed British director Nicholas Roeg is arguably Bowie’s best acting role and it would be hard to imagine anyone else playing an alien landing on our planet.

Film Fans: Dreams
Join me for Dreams, an erotic drama about a rich American philantropist and a Mexican immigrant ballet dancer which The Guardian described as “… a gripping emotional drama, supercharged with toxic sensuality and fear”.

Film Fans: It Was Just an Accident
It Was Just an Accident by the famed Iranian film-maker Jafar Panahi has been described as a tragicomedy, a thriller, a story of crime and punishment, and has won the 2025 Cannes festival Palme d’Or.

Film Fans: One Battle After Another
This time we’ll be seeing Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s “Vineland,” where “the fight against American fascism is a family affair” in the words of The New Yorker’s Justin Chang.
