Navigating Expatriate Relationships: A Talk with Dr. Catalina Woldarsky Meneses
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Woldarsky Meneses, clinical psychologist based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
She will be discuss the particularities and challenges faced by dual career, expatriate couples who undergo frequent geographical relocations related to work assignments. As a couple therapist with years of clinical experience working with this population, she has observed couples struggle with the complexity of having to decide which partner’s career will be prioritized (i.e., “lead spouse”) and then manage the inherent power imbalance in this arrangement. Leaving their country of origin brings with it numerous losses and challenges for these couples, especially for the accompanying spouse, who in many cases experiences a loss in status and professional identity during these frequent moves. Not surprisingly, this context can accentuate existing tensions in the relationship, often giving rise to feelings of anger and pain, in particular for the accompanying spouse whose pain is often unseen or invalidated by the lead spouse. This talk will culminate with a summary of the therapeutic process that promotes healing and closeness.
Catalina Woldarsky Meneses-PhD is a clinical psychologist who works in private practice, while also teaching at Webster University and training psychotherapists learning Emotion-focused Therapy. Immigration has been a central theme in her life, as she was born in Chile and grew up moving between Chile and Canada. Her research has focused on exploring the process of forgiveness in couples, and she co-authored a book on this topic published by the American Psychological Association in 2019.
