In Japan, izakaya is a place where drinks are served with food. An intimate, private space, perfect for relaxing after a day of studying or working. The term contains the words “i” (to sit), “saka” (alcoholic beverage), and “ya” (shop). Izakaya serve traditional Japanese dishes carefully prepared by chefs: from small introductory tapas paired with drinks to full-fledged signature dishes such as bao, katsu sando, and many others. Like Italian osterias, izakaya are considered popular in Japan, both for their authentic atmosphere and for the quality of the ingredients used, which evoke the authentic atmosphere of a thousand-year-old cultural and culinary tradition.
