Inaugurated in 1763, it is the second oldest existing opera house in Italy after the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. More signficantly, it was the first publicly funded opera house - worldwide.  It would take over two centuries for the teatro comunale to reach its present finished state, the facade added only in the 1930s and a major stage machinery and backstage overhaul in 1981.
