Notes

Deborah Baker is the English-born designer and founder of Fiorentini + Baker, whose original store is here in Bologna, although its shoes are found worldwide. Her interest in shoes originated at an early age while playing with her miniature godmother's colorful shoe cupboard. She graduated from Cordwainers College, the specialist school for leather-working, shoemaking and saddlery in London. She headed to Italy thereafter and after years of freelancing, she finally came out with her own line in 2001. Fiorentini + Baker was an instant success, and continues to be so at a global level.

A keen horsewoman as a teenager, American-born Tonya Hawkes remembers being fascinated with the workmanship of the leather saddle and tack she used each time she rode. She attended Seattle Central fashion program, and began her career in New York City with luxury fashion house Donna Karan and DKNY. Particularly drawn to the labels' accessories, she gradually made her mark in the field, eventually becoming an executive at Donna Karan and VP of shoes and accessories. Then Giovanna Furla, President of luxury accessory brand Furla, asked Tonya to be its creative director in Bologna. She had since collaborated with a number of famous fashion houses, until finally coming out with her own line of bags to international success in 2012.
