Once the exclusive domain of artisans, Italians are now engaging in their own home improvement projects. If you are the handy type, you can head to one of the mega fai da te (do-it-yourself) warehouses for construction materials, garden supplies and various hardware and fixtures. Of course, the teenage sales clerk at Castorama cannot be expected to impart the same kind of know-how you will find when speaking with the owner of your local ferramenta (hardware store). Stores of this kind are listed in the yellow pages under BRICOLAGE E FAI DAI TE or SUPERMERCATI, GRANDI MAGAZZINI E CENTRI COMMERCIALI.

The early bird definitely catches the worm. A few weeks into my search, I discovered that the real estate newspapers are often distributed late on the day before their publication date. I began gathering them in the afternoon instead of waiting until the next day, then making appointments immediately, beating out people who picked it up later. My husband and I got our apartment because after realizing immediately that it was the one for us, we made a beeline to the agency on his scooter. We had gotten into the habit of bringing along all of our documents and had everything necessary to prove we were good people and, more importantly, solvent. Shortly thereafter it became our new home.
